After settling the hot cocoa and a second set of cookies on the tray for Mrs. Montgomery, Sophie brought in all of her supplies. First she carefully arranged the cookie river and boats so that the river swirled down from the corner window onto a waiting table. The paper cranes, swans, frogs, and fish populated the river, popping out in odd places.

Next she arranged the painting supplies in the small kitchen and began to paint out her messages on the white board. But Mrs. Montgomery complained about the fumes, so she gathered her supplies and went to paint in the hallway instead.

After studying the printout from the web cam on 9th and Pearl, Sophie climbed out on the veranda. Ignoring Mrs. Montgomery's warnings to be careful or she would catch her death, Sophie carefully placed her three signs at the proper angles on both Mrs. Mongomery's windows.

The first was an inviting sea blue on a light sky blue background. She put it above the window where she had carefully laid her sugar and paper river. It said simply:

Anna, come home. This way --->

Sophie went out to the street and consulted her printout to survey the effect. Yes, the window that faced the street could be read at an oblique angle from inside the camera. She climbed back up to Mrs. Montgomery's and carefully placed the other two signs in the two windows on the other corner, where the web cam would catch them full on:

Transworld Credit

This first was painted an innocuous silver on white, with the credit card company's logo in bright green.

The second window was in blood red letters:

TAKE HEED.

She used Amy's stopwatch to time the web camera. She stayed perfectly still when she knew the web camera was taking the picture--her hands raised in the universal greeting sign they sent on the first spaceship capsule.

After the web cam had taken four shots--each five minutes apart, she took the "Take heed" sign down and put up another, this one in a darker green on the white posterboard:

I know you have my granddaughter

This she left up for six shots, a half an hour. Each time the camera took another shot, she posed with her finger wagging at the Transworld Credit Company.

The next sign was simply black on white. Sophie stepped aside so the camera could get the full, stark effect.

Anna Mizunami SSN 123-581-2203

The next was a deep purple with silver edging on the white. Sophie put it up and went out to the bike store across the way to make sure that the web camera got the correct angles.

Your numbers have stolen her soul and I want it back now!

She left this one out for twelve shots while she went inside to tuck Mrs. Montgomery in for the night, and to watch 60 Minutes to see if anyone on the outside had noticed her protest. She set up her own bed next to the window and set Amy's stopwatch so that she would know when to get up again.

Give her back, you identity sucking criminals!

This time she posed with her hand raised in a fist like the Mother Jones picture as she lead the miners in the first bloody strike in Colorado.
