in water

Sophie had been in the middle of Boulder Creek now for over a little over an hour. The creek ran through Martin Park, right in front of the home she had bought when she sold her parents, Yuki and Ichiro's, farm outside of Boulder. Yuki now spent her hours just looking up at the Flatirons, relieved she no longer had to milk at 4 a.m.. The park was ideal--a place where Yuki could smell the flowers on her good days and did not have to extend her hands into the earth to do it.

But on this warm indian summer day in September, people lined up to stare at Sophie as she lay in the creek with no intention of moving. She had made a little tent of the cool rushing water as the water slid over the two stones that tried and failed to block the flow in the middle of the stream. Watching her feet bob up and down with the strong current, she wondered why she did not tire. Too cold, probably. The mountain creek was frigid, even under the blinding sun. But she had no intention of getting out. Here, she told herself, the water knew who she was. The current raced about and beyond her, but the water knew its place. Kept its distance. The water at least, would not try to make her a part of itself.

Her daughter, Kit, saw her in the stream as she pulled up from work. She called out to Sophie come in before she caught her death of cold. Sophie refused. Thank heaven, Kit thought, that Amy was taking courses at the University of Colorado, just down the street. Anna would have been preferable, she was the doer, the go-getter and could always persuade anyone to do anything. Amy tended to linger, to see what was out there before leaping. But Anna was in California at Berkeley, and hadn't bothered keeping in touch. Kit had called just yesterday and Anna's dormmate sounded vague.

So Amy would have to do to convince Sophie to come out of the water. Kit quickly called Amy on the cell phone to come haul her grandmother out of the creek.
